Sepetang charms again 20 April 2017

Image
Post: Silas We are back at Sepetang again! But when we got there, we saw so many extraordinary things like it's our first time there. Probably because we had a guide to bring us to some places we haven't been from our previous visit. I think we were so engrossed by the wildlife in the mangrove that we just didn't realize that the river mouth nearby has just as much stuff. Somebody has been busy drying fishes for our dishes... A visit to the charcoal factory. At least this time I understand what was really going on in there. A walk among the mangroves, but it was in the afternoon, low tide and not very humid, so we didn't really see much of the creatures.  But we did see some inquisitive crabs coming out of their holes to greet us... I realized that when we were in the mangrove, we always look down, because that's where the crabs and mudskippers are. But this time when I looked up, it was like a different world altogether....

Who's the fairest of them all - 19 Apr 2017

Image
Posted by Xian Jin Where else to spend a short break, but Ipoh? It was unplanned, spontaneous and out-of-the-blue when my dad decided to bring us to Tasik Cermin, a place embedded deep in his childhood, even though he had only been here a few times. From the outside, it was the most unappealing and unattractive of landmarks; construction, lorries and sand deterred visitors. Who would ever visit such a place?  The Tunnel that bridges reality to fantasy. Tasik Cermin - "Mirror lake" in Malay.  Mirror, mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all? ps. me Struggling to get stones to skip more than 2 times. It was an enchanting and beautiful experience. Something so beautiful hidden from the world, disguised as a deserted and sandy land. I could stay here for hours, reading or relaxing under the tall, shady trees in silence. This hidden gem may not last long, however. Already, there are constructions ongoing, a...

Noisy Koel

Image
January finally arrives in the vale of Asia, Out of nowhere, an annoying sound alerts our ear. We looked out of the window, And saw a bird we know. The bird is called the Koel, And its description is easy to tell. Black all over its body, And red on its eyes only. Its morning call, (Made by its mouth and jaw) Would awake us instantly, And drive us crazy. We nearly made a petition, To shoot the Koel with some ammunition. We were irritated by the female Koel especially, And her call made us rest uncomfortably. February, March, April and May passed slowly. As slow as a tortoise can be. Suddenly, as June is approaching, The bird stopped its provoking. We immediately knew the Koel had moved on, And had gone to another patch of dirt by dawn. We walked into the garden, huddled together, “Good riddance to that bird!” we shouted altogether.                           ...

Getting a taste of cycling event - 14 & 15 April 2017

Image
Post by: Silas I was first introduced to this event by my mother, and she asked if I wanted to volunteer. At first I was reluctant because I didn't want some unknown event to spoil my relaxing 3-week holiday. But then I thought "Why not give it a try? I could at least have the chance to experience work...". So in the end I acquiesced. I didn't like it at first, because all the work was repetitive and boring (at least there were free snacks and drinks). But I sucked it up and try to do it as fast as I can. I did feel satisfied as this was my first time working "behind the scenes". By the time we finished I couldn't believe I actually help to pack 4000+ of goody bags, with the help of other volunteers of course.  When it comes to events like this, I would always sign up as a participant. But this was something new, something outside my comfort zone which I would never forget. Before we left a few of us were briefed on how to register the p...

Football, rain or shine!

Image
Posted by Brandon. A friend of ours introduced us to a community youth football league. I wanted to try something new, so I decided to join. This was a new experience for me, since I never joined a real football league before. The league is held every year, and if I'm not mistaken, it started in 2001. The place is located in Subang Jaya. It is quite far but worth it. My team is called the 'Vikings' and my teammates were all very friendly. I was given the number '11'. We still had to play even though it rained. If it is a heavy rain or thunderstorm, we had to refuge at a small cabin near the field until the rain stopped. I enjoyed playing in the rain because it feels like you are a real footballer. But my mother was the opposite. She kept herself under the umbrella, and said  no to playing under the rain! If the field is very wet after the rain stopped, (my mother said it wasn't a football field, but a vast swimming pool) the match ...

The Frog

Image
Oh thy little green frogs,  Who rest on sleeping logs,  And eat the beastly slugs, Or the small little bugs. Please be kind to these useful creatures, As they gobble up the pestful garden litter, I'm sure frogs are superstars, Oh what wonderful creatures they are!                                                                       Brandon Hah☺ Common Tree Frog/Four-Lined Tree Frog in my backyard. Discovered after I wrote my poem. Maybe I'm all frogs so I noticed the well-camouflaged frog.

Teaching is learning

Posted by Xian Jin "Now, what am I going to do with a 4-month break?" I thought, back in December. All of my friends are in colleges, brothers back to school, and I'm stuck at home for 4 months. I could laze around, wait for time to pass; or I could do something I had never done before!  Through friends, I got a job in a tuition centre as a marker.  I remember my first day working, how everything was new to me. Everyone was really friendly, as they taught me the procedures and process of my job. I made many mistakes, and I remember how nervous I was. I'm so thankful to have actually gone to the centre before - as a student, so it didn't feel so alien to me. About a month has passed, and I still feel excited and enthusiastic whenever I go off to work (I call it work, but really, its more like learning from a different position/viewpoint). Eye Level, a Maths and English tuition centre (NOT an optical shop!).  I got some opportunities to teach there al...
