Belum: Bamboo Rafting - 30 May 2013

Image
Nice view at the private jetty of the resort.  Families spent their time together fishing for bait fish, then the men would go to the outer lake for more serious fishing. All ready for bamboo rafting. 1st time for the 4 of them. Confusion. I thought they're supposed to row in the same direction? Gutsy grandma at the lake. Brandon stayed behind at the houseboat. Family photo. There's no TV in the room, so what's left to do at night? Starry, starry night for stargazing. Good to unwind.

Belum: Sg Enam Base Camp Waterfall - 29 May 2013

A nice rapid for fishing and to have a dip in the cool water Close to nature - rock climbing, did the rock look like it's cut into two?, observing the butterflies and insects...  s hoes got stuck in the soft sand & washed away. Not the best time for hornbill sightings, which is common here between August to October every year. We saw 3 hornbills while cruising, and their nests in the tree holes. Kampung orang asli (above) We're unable to visit the aboriginal villages this trip cos they're quarantined recently due to the spread of leprosy but we saw a few orang asli while cruising (below). Entrance to Sg Enam Base Camp Waterfall - not the best waterfall here but suitable for all ages. Very rich in flora and fauna. We enjoyed trekking to the waterfall the most. HUGE trunk Cool and clear water with many fishes and even freshwater crab. Beware of the blood thirsty leeches!! A practical casing for 12x hard boiled eggs...

Belum: Rafflesia - 29 May 2013

Pak Ya, a local tour agent at the public jetty, about 5 mins away from the resort. He's a very experienced and friendly guide cum boatman, and knew the place so well.  At the public jetty - see the other side of the bridge connecting the East-West Highway. We started the boat cruise very early at 7.30am. Most of us still needed to warm-up! In our haste to leave the resort, we forgot the bread for our sandwiches. So we had a chance to stop by the only mobile and floating store. The water was so clear and still. It's so serene. We're like the only visitors here. The wave refraction was caused by the movement of water from deep to shallow. This place was flooded to create the reservoir, so there're still trees underwater! Quite a task to maneuver the boat in order to avoid the shallow part of the water. Our 1st stop in search of "Rafflesia" flower. There're 8 sites to see the rafflesia. We're told that we j...

Belum-Temenggor Rainforest - 28 May 2013

Our journey from Ipoh to Belum was longer than expected. We have a brief stopover at the Archaeological Gallery of Lenggong Valley in Hulu Perak, about 80km from Ipoh. If you're rushing for time, I think you can give this place a miss. There's not much in the gallery. But since we're in the area, and we've come so far ..... we might as well take a look. The gallery apart, Lenggong Valley has a significant place in the history for the early man and a goldmine for archaeologists. The well-known "Perak Man", ie the oldest human skeleton found in Malaysia, was discovered in one of the hilly caves nearby. But the original Perak Man's skeletal remains were in the  KL National Museum , only a replica was placed in the gallery here. To the untrained eyes, Lenggong is a typical small town. But this is the place where one of the oldest human civilisation outside the African continent once lived.  Thus, UNESCO recognised the Lenggong Valley as a worl...
