Getting around Taipei like a local - Jin

Image
Posted by Xian Jin What's better than adventuring and shopping in Malaysia? Doing that in Taiwan of course! We are blessed to have the opportunity to go there this year, and we had a truly wonderful experience. So, buckle your seat-belts, as I take you all on a journey to Taipei in my eyes... Before this, I always thought that Taipei is just a modern city, where many people go to eat and shop. I realize that they are so much more. Taipei is also richly filled with history and culture, nature and animals! Imagine you're standing in the middle of a huge maze, with walls that rise so high you can only see a strip of blue sky. Now, replace the walls with shops and stores, just rows and rows of them in every direction you go. The smell of fresh, hot food drifts into your nostrils... and you're in Jiufen! There are people all around you, hustling and bustling their way through. No, they aren't live cats and ducks... they're ocarinas!! Who knows, if ...

Creating special moments - 25-28 Aug 2016

Revisiting Penang after many years, with my family and my mom, my auntie, my brother and his son as well as my cousin from George Town. It's mainly a makan trip to taste the street food in Penang as well as to see the rapid changes in George Town, now a heritage city and a must-see for tourists. With such a big group, it's hard to visit many places. But it's a good experience to travel with families and spend time together. It's also the first time that my mom had seen the Penang Bridge, the last time she stepped on the island was 50 years ago!  Pokemon Go craze sweeps Penang malls! A stay at Lost Paradise Resort. It's not one of those 5-star luxury resorts, it's a hidden gem, quite strategic in between Tanjung Bungah and the famed Batu Feringhhi. The only downside is.. there's no beach. But it has a beautiful seafront and the whole place was designed uniquely - with colourful, wacky Balinese and Minangkabau architecture. We also enjoyed strolling ...

Think Outside the Woods (28~30 May)

Image
Posted by Silas I greatly anticipated the Kiwanis Builders' Camp at Benum Hill Resort, Pahang. I love facing the challenges, alone in the woods and doing different things with new friends. I noticed that this time more than half the participants came from sheltered homes  (ie homes for the abused, neglected or abandoned children). I like them because they were very open in one to one conversations, independent, but very shy in groups. It took a lot of effort to get them to speak out in group discussions, although they had brilliant ideas. But as we spent more time together, we grew comfortable and started to be more confident.  People think camp is a time to have fun, to learn, to get along with each other, and come out a better person. That's just pretty much it. But to me, those are not the main reasons. Thinking hard without thinking caps... Besides fun, I realized that these games were trying to train us to look at things from different angles; thin...

A sense of achievement at UPM Edu-Park - 28 May 2016

Image
I took up a challenge to do something I'd never imagined doing before - a 6km group cycling event. I don't even consider myself a cyclist, though I know how to ride a bicycle from point A to B on concrete roads :) From the beginning, my goal was merely to finish the event in one piece.  The inaugural cycling carnival was organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia to create an awareness of their education park to the public. The cycling event was held within the scenic park of their campus. The park is very much under-utilised, as it's meant for their students and a private property. So, it's a good opportunity for family outing and it's non-competitive, ie we could do it leisurely. Every team has 4 members, so I estimated there're over a hundred participants. Entrance to the scenic Edu-park. Note this cycling was challenging cos it's mostly on "cow dung" dirt roads. I really hope it's already over...and I was celebrating my success at ...

Sekinchan Bird-watching - 21 May 2016

Image
Besides the paddy fields, bird-watching is the next best attraction in Sekinchan. You don't have to look for them like in a treasure hunt. They're an open secret - tree birds, water birds, migratory birds; in flight or nestings in pairs on naked tree branches or having a fiesta in the fields or simply watching the day goes by on the electrical cables. A Cinnamon Bittern in the field.  We saw them often, in pairs usually, feasting in the paddy fields. A black-crowned night heron amongst the little egrets. A juvenile black-crowned night heron. I believe this is still a juvenile black-crowned night heron in transition to adulthood. A pair of black-crowned night herons at peak of breeding season. Can you spot the difference? An adult version We've taken so many pictures of the  black-crowned  night herons, but there're so many variations. The stocky bird has short neck, is usually active only at night, thus the name 'night heron...
