Malaysia has caught on the Makers' fever as we've seen a few fairs this year promoting the Makers' culture. The KL Engineering & Science Fair at The Mines, KL was another successful feat promoting STEM education through various workshops, activities, display of the Makers' capabilities. It has all the party-like atmosphere, with exhibitors from large corporates, universities, schools and even individuals.  Though held in KL, we did not see a lot of participation from the schools in KL or PJ. Programming a life-size robot made from junk materials. KakiDIY booth was run by a 15 year old! Notebook-sized circuit boards that can even replace computers one day! Working at Mad Science workshop! Maker Faire is a 2-day showcase of the DIY culture and wacky and fun projects in science, engineering & technology, art, craft and even waste materials.  We've not heard of it before this. But this is Singapore's 4th year in organising the Maker Faire which started in the US, now spread to all parts of the world.  We met makers from all walks of life, young and old, institutions, professionals, hobbyists, tinkerers, students and kids!  There's a lot of creativity vibes here. This is one event that's not limited by age and full of surprises to show what they're making and share what they're learning. As the boys're growing up, we threw away many of their old bicycles. Here, we learn that we can turn old bicycles into new inventions eg bike blenders to make smoothies, bike generators to pedal for power, bike mowers to keep the lawns tidy, etc. This is a fully-automated "Latte Art" drawing machine from Japan. If you have some time in Ipoh, we recommend you to visit this interesting, down-to-earth Geological Museum in Ipoh. It has the most complete fossil and mineral exhibits in Malaysia, and indeed appropriate to be in a Perak town that's equally rich in rocks and minerals.    An interesting time-scale illustrating the beginning of the earth's formation, with generous collections of rocks, fossils, gemstones and ornaments, minerals etc, mostly from Malaysia. A cool respite from the heat of the day.  A good collection of plant and animal fossils including elephant tooth, fish, shells, leaves, etc  Glow-in-the-dark stones... The museum was extensively renovated and upgraded so it's really worth to check it out. Construction of a Palong was no mean task!   Also on display was an interesting collection of different tin ore samples found in Malaysia as well as the history of the tin mining industry in the Kinta Val...

 A 3-month exhibition, ie "A Tin Mining Family" at an iconic heritage building in the Falim town, Ipoh. The story of Falim House, built in the 1920s, was the residence of tin mining tycoon, Foo family until the late 1990s. In the adjacent land to the Falim House, the Tin City Ipoh development project is transforming this sleepy town to a vibrant commercial centre. The developer, at least, promised to preserve this heritage building. The Towkay Foo was, at that time, looked upon as the richest overseas Chinaman in the world! An intriguing object - nobody knew what it was, so it was called " Whatsamacallit ". Perhaps the Chinese overheard the British curious about what you might call it, and thus the name sticked since then.
