Stop and Sea

Image
Posted by Xian Jin He, births every living creature, casts the sea, sand and stone, carves them each a certain feature, a certain hue, a certain tone. His light is a Ray, it colours every detail, it frees the birds at bay, and darkness will exhale. You know, He's in the stormy clouds and in the choppy sea, so why should you have any doubts? Look up; it shines for me! Smash, thrash, swish, swash, the melody is more in than out; Music gives the heart a wash, Did you hear that din? Shout! In the gale, He pulls you back, when deserted - are you really alone?  Remember, He's always on our track- After all, He crafted our very bone. -Xian Jin

It's been 2 months?! - 27th June 2017

Image
Posted by Xian Jin One moment I was wondering about what’s going to happen. Now, here I am preparing for my finals. It’s as if I’m on the express train of life. I remember how I was so undecided and unsure on what to do, what not to do, what to say, what not to say… etc before I entered college. Questions and doubts were floating like stormy clouds in my head, ready to pour. I had mixed feelings about starting school again, after 6 months at home- I left my job too, and missed it deeply (still do). Fast forward 2  months later, here I am, as busy as one can be with assignments, presentations, so on and so forth. It’s strange how time can pass so fast. Despite having been here for over a month, I still get lost occasionally. This place is huge!! I am really enjoying my time here, ‘even though’ it has only been a few weeks (or ‘because’, I don’t know which yet). I’ve fallen in love with the beautiful scenery of the lakes and trees, the ducks, cats, tortoises- y...

Who's the fairest of them all - 19 Apr 2017

Image
Posted by Xian Jin Where else to spend a short break, but Ipoh? It was unplanned, spontaneous and out-of-the-blue when my dad decided to bring us to Tasik Cermin, a place embedded deep in his childhood, even though he had only been here a few times. From the outside, it was the most unappealing and unattractive of landmarks; construction, lorries and sand deterred visitors. Who would ever visit such a place?  The Tunnel that bridges reality to fantasy. Tasik Cermin - "Mirror lake" in Malay.  Mirror, mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all? ps. me Struggling to get stones to skip more than 2 times. It was an enchanting and beautiful experience. Something so beautiful hidden from the world, disguised as a deserted and sandy land. I could stay here for hours, reading or relaxing under the tall, shady trees in silence. This hidden gem may not last long, however. Already, there are constructions ongoing, a...

Teaching is learning

Image
Posted by Xian Jin "Now, what am I going to do with a 4-month break?" I thought, back in December. All of my friends are in colleges, brothers back to school, and I'm stuck at home for 4 months. I could laze around, wait for time to pass; or I could do something I had never done before!  Through friends, I got a job in a tuition centre as a marker.  I remember my first day working, how everything was new to me. Everyone was really friendly, as they taught me the procedures and process of my job. I made many mistakes, and I remember how nervous I was. I'm so thankful to have actually gone to the centre before - as a student, so it didn't feel so alien to me. About a month has passed, and I still feel excited and enthusiastic whenever I go off to work (I call it work, but really, its more like learning from a different position/viewpoint). Eye Level, a Maths and English tuition centre (NOT an optical shop!).  I got some opportunities to teach there al...

Musings: End of high school

Image
Posted by Joshua 2016 has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride- to me at least. This year will always remain especially close to my heart, not just because of the places I've been to or the things I did, but also because of the memories and friends made in my final year of high school. It has been an incredible journey so far, and as much as I look forward to the future, there's a huge part of me wishing that I could turn back time to start it all over again... (but I would remove the part about exams if I could) A sweet birthday to a year of many flavours. 16 years have passed by in a flash... and my family were always there for me throughout. They have all seen me at my best and my worst, and  I'm so thankful for each and every one of them, for their bottomless love and care. Including Cookie, our Miniature Pinscher. I'm also very thankful for my friends and teachers who have stuck through thick and thin on our journey. On the way we learned...

Getting around Taipei like a local - Jin

Image
Posted by Xian Jin What's better than adventuring and shopping in Malaysia? Doing that in Taiwan of course! We are blessed to have the opportunity to go there this year, and we had a truly wonderful experience. So, buckle your seat-belts, as I take you all on a journey to Taipei in my eyes... Before this, I always thought that Taipei is just a modern city, where many people go to eat and shop. I realize that they are so much more. Taipei is also richly filled with history and culture, nature and animals! Imagine you're standing in the middle of a huge maze, with walls that rise so high you can only see a strip of blue sky. Now, replace the walls with shops and stores, just rows and rows of them in every direction you go. The smell of fresh, hot food drifts into your nostrils... and you're in Jiufen! There are people all around you, hustling and bustling their way through. No, they aren't live cats and ducks... they're ocarinas!! Who knows, if ...

A Cool Breather in Cameron - 22-25 Jan 2016

Image
Posted by Xian Jin Finally, the moment we have been waiting all year: a rest and retreat at Cameron Highlands! I was longing for a cool, refreshing time up here, away from the scorching heat back in KL.  The OMF bungalow, where we stayed for 4 days. It was very spacious, with so many places and treasures to explore and discover. I spent much time in the library, going through old books in peace and quietness.  The scenery was simply beautiful, lush green surrounding the entire bungalow. It was a cold, squally morning; the forest of different shades of green overlooking the blue sky. The air was so fresh and clean, a pleasant environment. Football Time!!! We spent hours outside playing sports. I enjoyed the cooling atmosphere up here, something we didn't have back in the city.  You can never really feel bored here, what with books to read, animals to play with and the people you spend hours with.  It's moments like thi...

Ho Chi Minh, Diamond of the Far East - 17-23 Dec

Image
Posted by Xian Jin I had a very memorable trip to Vietnam recently. It really was an eye-opening trip, because the life and culture there was totally different from Malaysia. Despite staying there for only 7 days, we took the opportunity to uncover this city as much as we could, to blend in with the lifestyle of the people who, only a few decades back, had gone through terrible sufferings of war. I could see that the Vietnamese loved being outdoors, and I liked how they can always be found in groups scattered around parks or in shops just to chitchat or play some games. Unfortunately, this is something uncommon in Malaysia.  Even at night, people crowd around in squares to watch musical performances, a mini-football game or to just gather around and chitchat. Ho Chi Minh is known for having rows and rows of shops selling the same things, be it guitars, sports equipment or shoes. I enjoyed visiting these shops, as I could join in with them or even just wa...
