Xiangjiang Safari Park was the highlight of our trip to Guangzhou. The area covers 130 hectares and it's the biggest safari in Asia. Adult ticket price is RMB250 and child (height of 1.2-1.5m) is RMB125. The park is just 5 minutes away by shuttle bus from Chimelong hotel. There're 2 parts to the park, 1) The Safari on Wheels where the trams will take us around the safari; 2) Safari on Foot, the 'walk through' zoo. We wanted to take the tram first so we used the North entrance. Though we arrived early, we already saw the crowds and dozens of school buses. We literally ran all the way into the park so that we're ahead of the school children. Safari on Wheels "Do keep all parts of your body within the vehicle"?? The tram ride takes about 40 minutes. We played tour guides during the recent Raya holidays. Normally we would rather stay put in KL as it's usually deserted during the holiday. In our group, there're 13 people and one toddler. Perhaps it coincided with a long school break, so people could travel on different days, that's why we're spared from long traffic jam. So far so good..... until we reached Ipoh.  All hotels, big or small, were fully booked. Coffee shops were crazily crowded with people sitting as well as standing and waiting by the side of the tables. There's barely space to walk. A popular 2-storey dim sum restaurant was so packed until the customers have to wait on the roadside. The restaurants actually allowed people to stand around, crowding the places making them unbearably stuffy and hot. It's quite an experience for us and our visitors; we've never seen anything like this though we visit Ipoh so often. We heard that people started coming in at 6.30am as soon as the shops ...

Posting by Xian Jin We joined a homeschooling group to the Zoo Negara for the Malaysian endangered animal programme. The endangered animals included the orang utans, tapirs, Malayan tigers, elephants and hornbills. This programme explained the unique physical characteristics of animals. The zookeeper also told us of the animals' diet, behaviour, the habitats they live in, the population of the animals in the wild and the conservation efforts to save our endangered friends. The Malayan tapirs are black and white in colour. A tapir has a large stocky body and a flexible proboscis (nose). A young tapir looks like a watermelon for camouflage, after six months they will be like their parents.  Did you know that tapirs sleep in the day and are active at night?  The hornbill has a casque above its beak. The male hornbill hunts food for the whole family. Therefore if a poacher kills a male hornbill, it is like killing the whole family as the female hornbill does not go o...

Brandon joined the homeschooling group to the National Zoo for the "I am a Zoo Keeper" programme. Becoming a zoo keeper is certainly a labour of love. Zoo keepers are fully responsible for the animals in their sections - they clean, feed, provide enrichment for the animals in their care.  Edwina, who is a zoo keeper and our guide for the day took us by trams to the Mammal Kingdom. She educates zoo visitors about the animals in the zoo.  The children were supposed to do food puzzle for 3 groups of animals, ie porcupine, binturong and the striped hyena. The zoo keepers were supposed to keep these wild animals fit and sensitive to their instincts. Hence, the children would help the zoo keepers to prepare some food for them but the animals would not be spoon fed, rather, they have to do some exercises and use their senses to get to the food.
