An Amethyst Remembrance - 19, 23~25 Aug 2017

Post by: Silas August, the most climactic point of this year. With an exception of my IGCSE exams, which is next year, I feel very much accomplished. There were two significant events that happened in the middle of August - my school's graduation ceremony and the annual camp. It was as if everything that we worked for had paid off. The emotions I felt were inexplicably ecstatic.  First off is the graduation ceremony. After our performance last year, which went rather well, I was quite enthusiastic for the next one. However, I felt demotivated because the person that I looked up to when it comes to things like this was not around. So, I wasn't very keen to perform in this year's drama.  But, I had to. I didn't want to leave my class hanging behind just because of my selfishness. So, I pushed on. Although the road was very discouraging - I have faced many obstacles in getting the team together on the same page.  It was hard to bring the team together with...

Think Outside the Woods (28~30 May)

Image
Posted by Silas I greatly anticipated the Kiwanis Builders' Camp at Benum Hill Resort, Pahang. I love facing the challenges, alone in the woods and doing different things with new friends. I noticed that this time more than half the participants came from sheltered homes  (ie homes for the abused, neglected or abandoned children). I like them because they were very open in one to one conversations, independent, but very shy in groups. It took a lot of effort to get them to speak out in group discussions, although they had brilliant ideas. But as we spent more time together, we grew comfortable and started to be more confident.  People think camp is a time to have fun, to learn, to get along with each other, and come out a better person. That's just pretty much it. But to me, those are not the main reasons. Thinking hard without thinking caps... Besides fun, I realized that these games were trying to train us to look at things from different angles; thin...

1st Kiwanis Builder Camp 29-31 Aug 2015

Image
Posted by Xian Wei This was the first Kiwanis camp organised for young teens. At first, I felt that this was just going to be like any other camps before. Since I didn’t know any of the campers (except one) I felt shy and nervous and didn’t talk much. Nevertheless, I felt really enthusiastic about a new experience.  We slept in dorms, much to my delight, and after we settled we went for ice-breaking sessions. When we were to be separated into teams I felt lonely because I’m not with my friend. So I just sat with my teammates and we discussed about our team name and cheer. After that we played station games. That warmed us up a lot and soon after that was over we became friends with one another.  Next morning I felt refreshed for the obstacle courses. This was the part that was most fun to me because I like more hands-on activities. We did the flying fox but it wasn’t as exciting as I’ve done it many times. After that long, tiring afternoon we had a l...

Adventure Sports camp -10-12 April 2015

Image
Posted by Xian Wei This year, I joined an Adventure Sports camp for 3 days, also organised by Radiant Retreats. This is a level 2 camp, just before the Wilderness Skills Camp under the Bronze Category. This time there were about 16 participants. We were divided unevenly into 3 groups.  Rope Climbing...Our first lesson of the camp. The ropes blistered my hands..      After that, we went river trekking at Kg. Chemperoh again, but this time we went further upstream. In the midst of river trekking, we also did river crossing because the water was deep there. When we finished, we were totally drenched... But the water activities weren't over yet! We went for rafting after that and did river tubing there. It was really fun... By then the water activities were over. It was time to go back to the campsite...  The next day, we did basic abseiling. Next, we did map reading. We were asked to draw our dream island. The top left...

Kiwanis Youth Camp - 11-15 Dec 2014

Image
Posted by Xian Jin I joined the Kiwanis Youth Camp again this year, since last year's camp had been a truly great experience. The theme was 'Learn, Live & Lead Together.' What I like about these sort of camps is that I can try something new, not just physical and endurance activities but also learning how to live up to our full potential. This time, the campsite was in Dusun Eco Resort. Before we reached there, we visited a special needs centre.  I could see that the camp participants were trying to interact with them, even though most of them were not familiar with the special needs people. I was touched to see that there were no barriers between us and the special needs people. We played telematches and had fun with them. When I reached Dusun Eco Resort, I thought that it was very clean and spacious. I immediately felt at home. Some of us already knew each other so I just stuck around with the familiar faces. After we were divided into groups, ...

Janda Baik's Wilderness Skills Camp - 13-15 Aug 2014

Image
Posted by Xian Wei I joined a wilderness skills camp for 3 days at Janda Baik. It was organised by Radiant Retreats. There were many levels of camps and this camp was Level 3 under the Bronze category. There were only 14 participants as it was held during a school week. Without hesitation, I joined the camp because I love camping, going outdoor, meeting new friends and learning new life skills. Learning the basic First Aid. It was our first and very important lesson. Arm sling (elevated) is when your collarbone is broken.  After that we went river trekking at Kg. Chemperoh. We learnt how to filter clean water from the river. Examples of what we should do when your friend is injured and when you are lost in the jungle... Helping an injured man...  My first time riding an All-Terrain Vehicle. It was very easy - like riding a motorcycle. Jumping from rocks to rocks instead of playing electronics, climbing over fallen trees i...
